Westermo designs and develops products for use in industrial applications and environments with high interference levels. With over 30 years of experience we are fully conversant with the market’s need for reliability and functionality, where a product is expected to work faultlessly for many years. These are some of the factors that we consider when we develop a new product to provide an optimal final cost.
- No Downtime
Our products are designed to minimise downtime, which can give rise to significant costs, when for instance a production process is left at a standstill. This is achieved by only using high quality components such as “long life” capacitors. In addition, we verify functionality in environments with high levels of interference and every unit is rigorously tested prior to shipping.
- Environments with high levels of interference
Investigations show that up to 70% of all data disturbances are due to poor installation or interference from the environment, surrounding equipment, machinery or cabling.
Only 20% are due to either hardware or software faults. This demonstrates that most of the sources of communication problems are external to your system.
- EMC
Westermo products are often installed with other industrial equipment that generates interference. Accordingly, it is important to develop products that conform to the industry standards covering EMC.
- Galvanic isolation
One of the most common causes of data communication errors are differential ground potentials or earth loops. This problem can occur when connected equipment is powered from different distribution panels with different ground potentials when referenced to earth. Any stray current could take two different routes to ground, either the correct path via the local earth, or via the signal ground of the serial port to the earth on the connected equipment. The latter can cause both downtime and damage to the equipment. Problems can also occur on the signal cables when they are routed alongside power or telecoms cables, which create an electromagnetic field that can affect adjacent data communication signals. One way to protect your equipment against the above problems is to use products that provide galvanic isolation between all the different communications interfaces and to the power supply.
- Transient suppression
Another major problem is transients. These are short yet high voltage pulses that are generated when machinery starts, fluorescent tubes are switched on or when lightning strikes nearby. Westermo uses transient suppression components to protect equipment against the damage that can occur in these circumstances.
- Extended temperature range
In some applications products are required to withstand extreme temperature conditions. We guarantee product functionality by using high quality components that have an extended working temperature range.
- Mechanical performance
In industrial applications products may sometimes be mounted into moving or vibrating installations. Our products are mechanically adapted to these conditions. The DIN enclosures are intended for mounting onto 35 mm DIN-rails, where the units are attached and locked in a single action that ensures secure installation. The DIN-enclosure has been designed to allow all connectors and status LEDs to be easily available for fast and easy installation.
